Keep Your Promotions Green
Recycling of waste products is becoming more and more a part of our everyday lives. Our consciences are constantly being pricked about the environmental consequences of our day-to-day activities and the legacy we may leave future generations. The UK lagged behind the other EU countries in taking action. It is generally accepted that the UK reacted too slowly to the 1999 EU Directive on waste. Under this directive the UK must now reduce the amount of Biodegradable Waste going into Landfill from the 18.1m tonnes in 2003/4 to 13.7m tonnes in 2010, 9.2m in 2013 and 6.3m in 2020. Public awareness has to be raised as a result. Acknowledged by the Waste Industry as one of the most successful methods is the use of Promotional Products. One example, easily recognisable, is the Carrier/Shopping Bag. Now widely available in recyclable and recycled materials – cotton, jute, non-woven polyester etc. – bags of this sort offer large print areas to illustrate the need for recycling and Companies’ support of this widely acknowledged issue. They are being particularly used at events like Exhibitions and Seminars to dispense information to visitors and delelgates. Over the past few years, as recycling has become more of a concern, the range of publicity material has increased. First to come along were Promotional Pencils, which are now available made from recycled newspaper/plastic, recycled paper money, recycled lunch trays, recycled scraps of denim, sustainable wood and others. Recycled pens were an obvious addition. These have now been followed by Tshirts, Fleece Jackets, Caps and Scarves, USB Flashdrives, Ring Binders, Document Wallets, Highlighters, Erasers, Desk Accessories, Mugs, Puzzles and Games, Water-powered Clocks and Calculators and Computer Accessories . An easy illustration of the two ways in which these products can be used is the different reasons they are purchased by Local Authorities and Universities. For Local Authorities it is to raise Public Awareness, for Universities to show like-mindedness with their “customers” (the Students). The list of products available in this sector will, no doubt, continue to grow as will the list of Exhibitions given over to this subject, now regularly appearing on the Marketing Calendar. |
